For a bit of personal interest I decided to find out what happened after Ramsay left the restaurants, sadly it’s mostly depressing but yet an interesting read. I still have a few gaps in my information so if anyone can help out it would be greatly appreciated.

Ramsay was awarded £75,000 plus costs. Ramsay said at the time: “I won’t let people write anything they want to about me. We have never done anything in a cynical, fake way.” Wikid

August 2007, Tim the ex-chef goes to court over drink driving offenses, he claimed the negative publicity from the show has led him to drink driving. During the questioning by police Tim repeatedly made references about Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and it being the cause of his ‘ruined’ life. More Info

More Info

[/Extra]
I have spent a fair bit of time trying to find out what has happened to this restaurant but I’ve yet to find anything definite, although it does look like it’s gone bust or moved, as a look in the British phone directory lists no businesses called ‘Lanterna’ in Letchworth.

If anyone who reads this article lives in the UK, or ideally London the easiest way to find out what happened would be to call the Doctor Clinic next door which is shown in the episode (see pic).

DR

It’s called the “Garden City Surgery” and their contact details are located on their website @ http://www.gardencitysurgery.org.uk.
It would be greatly appreciated if someone could find out what happened to Lanterna for completeness sake.

Summary

Throughout the current 5 seasons 22 restaurants have been visited.
Out of these only 9 are still open under the same owners.

So if you plan to have your restaurant on Kitchen Nightmares you have less then a 50% chance of being saved, good luck.

If anyone has updates or more news on any of the restaurants I’d very thankful if you post here or email me.
Images are used under ‘fair use’, the timelines are constructed based on news reports and are not necessarily correct.

  1. Great idea. I guess you’re not covering the awful American series? Hey, fyi, we also published a piece from Allan Love after his visit from Ramsay:
    http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/food/2007/10/my_kitchen_nightmare_with_rams.html

  2. Hey thanks for the comment!, I’m thinking about doing the U.S series but doing a blog on it doesn’t appeal to me as much as the UK version did.

  3. It was interesting to see all of this compiled in one place. But I think the real question is not how many of these restaurants was GR unable to save; it’s how many would have closed if he hadn’t helped? Of all of the restaurants we’ve seen, I think only La Riviera (Abstract) would have survived without help, and only because the owner had deep pockets and didn’t seem to mind throwing his money away. We’ve seen 21 restaurants on the way to certain failure, and GR has managed to save 9 of them. Doesn’t seem like a bad record to me.

  4. Very nice website, I really enjoyed reading thru what happened to all these places once he left.

Saving 9 out of 22 restaurants may not sound like a great record but you have to understand that all of these places were in deep trouble before well he got there.

To be honest I think the record is pretty good. If he had opened all of these places himself and that many closed then I would think it’s not a good track record.

Anyway, I really enjoy the show and thank whoever created this website for following up!!

  5. Interesting reading, thanks for that. I really thought that more of these would have survived.

  6. DON’T do this on the American series. In fact, don’t even watch the U.S. version. Its awful. Its FOX television at its crappiest, and FOX television can get pretty crappy, even for crap.. Most people here (in the U.S.) that have seen both series, prefer the original.

Why GR even went with FOX for his U.S. tv exposure is beyond me. He must be getting bad advice.

  7. Agree with above. The survival rate might be 50% with Ramsay’s intervention, but it would most certainly be 0% without.

  8. Good work. So many of these businesses deserved to fail, they were offered a lifeline by GR and still fail. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

I am pleased to see GR giving individual staff members a fair go, offering them jobs or work experience, etc.

I don’t normally like traincrash TV, but I was sucked in by this series.

  9. MangaTower » Blog Archive » Life After Kitchen Nightmares…

Life after Kitchen Nightmares, Ever wondered what happened to the restaurants after Gordon Ramsay left?…

  10. While they may only have a 50% chance of surviving after Ramsey, without Ramsey, I don’t think any of them would survive. And some of the ones that have gone down, the Ramsey period at least gave them a chance to recover some of their financial burdens. Coming on the show is a last ditch effort to turn arround, it’s up to the owners to make it work over the long term.

  11. One more update: Maggie’s is now closed. The odds get worse all the time. This link probably won’t work, but I’ll try…

  12. Morgan’s restaurant (Dec /06):
It looks like it is no longer Morgan’s. As at 11 FEB/08, there is a planning application for Oddfellow’s Restaurant (http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Images/tcm21-116955.pdf), and Oddfellows is listed in yell.com (see below), at the old address for Morgan’s. Not yet able to find any other new info, but just FYI.

    http://www.yell.com/ucs/UcsSearchAction.do?M=&rad=&keywords=Restaurants+-+Traditional&companyName=&searchType=relatedclassification&ooa=&location=Liverpool%2C+Merseyside&scrambleSeed=&searchall=&clarifyIndex=&ssm=&broaderLocation=&selectedClassification=RESTAURANTS+-+MODERN+CUISINE&lastClarifyOptions=&lastClarifyIndex=&lastSearchall=&lastKeyword=&cam=intToolbar

  13. I think you have also to see what Gordon made with the Restaurants like Momma Cherries, she was buing a new bigger place because she made so much money, I think the revisit episodes where really good, because you see what was going on after he left.

  14. I think Gordon made some of those people realize they had to work hard to make a go of it and they couldn’t take the pressure. I’ve often heard the phrase “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen!” I think that’s probably what eventually made Morgan’s go under..none of those ladies wanted to work! And the worst one was that lazy woman at the vegetarian restaurant!! (was that Lanterna’s??) What a piece of work she was!!

  15. the fish and anchor has bean closed for 3 months and has bean for sale also for last 4 months

  16. Thanks for your site. I watched a rerun of series 2 episode 1 last night and found your site.

I found the following link in the good food guide. It has a phone number.
    01462 684346

    http://www.thegreatfoodguide.com/detail.aspx?placeid=3700

  17. I am fat, do you think Gordon would do shop vac liposuction on me? He could use the fat for a glazing crust or something…mmmmh, glazing-rendered-fat…

  18. thanks for the site was wonderful to be able to see what has become of the restaurants after gordon left.

the origional series is much better than the US version
gordon came to a Restaurant near me in march and we didnt even know he was here till the episode aired

dosent seem like they care about actually saving business here like in the uk where gordon goes out and gets the locals to come in and try the new food 6 months is a long time for a failing business to last beefore the owners can talk about it

seems to me that the us version is all about showing the most disgusting and disfunctional restraunts they can find
